## How the difference is calculated

The calculator counts calendar days from the start date to the end date. By default the start day is counted and the end day is not, which is how age, interest and notice periods are usually counted. Tick **Include end date** when both days count, for example for leave, hotel nights plus checkout day, or an event that runs from one date to another.

## Frequently asked questions

### How do I count days between two dates?

Subtract the earlier date from the later one. From 1 January to 31 January is 30 days. If you count both the first and last day (for example for a leave application or a hotel stay), tick 'Include end date' to get 31.

### How many days are there in a year?

365 days, or 366 in a leap year. A year is a leap year if it is divisible by 4, except century years that are not divisible by 400. 2028 is the next leap year.

### How are months counted?

We count full calendar months first, then the remaining days. 31 January to 28 February is counted as 28 days rather than one month, because the 31st does not exist in February.

### What counts as a working day here?

Monday to Friday. For Saturdays, bank holidays or your own leave list, use the working days calculator.
