How PPF interest is calculated

PPF interest is worked out monthly on the lowest balance between the 5th and the last day of the month, and added to the account once a year on 31 March. This calculator assumes you deposit the full yearly amount before 5 April, which earns the most.

Balance after year = (Opening balance + Deposit) × (1 + rate)

Key PPF rules

PPF vs other options

PPF gives guaranteed, tax-free returns, which makes it a strong choice for the safe part of your savings. For higher long-term growth with market risk, compare a mutual fund SIP. For shorter goals, a bank fixed deposit is more flexible.

Frequently asked questions

What is the PPF interest rate now?
7.1% per year, compounded yearly, for the October to December 2026 quarter. The government reviews small savings rates every quarter.
How much will ₹1.5 lakh a year in PPF become in 15 years?
About ₹40.68 lakh at 7.1%, on a total deposit of ₹22.5 lakh. The interest earned of about ₹18.18 lakh is fully tax-free.
What are the minimum and maximum PPF deposits?
Minimum ₹500 and maximum ₹1,50,000 in a financial year.
When should I deposit in PPF to earn the most interest?
Before the 5th of the month. Interest is calculated on the lowest balance between the 5th and the end of each month, so depositing the yearly amount before 5 April earns interest for the full year.
Is PPF tax-free?
PPF is EEE: deposits qualify for the 80C deduction in the old regime, and the interest and maturity amount are tax-free in both regimes.
