Choose the months. For a full financial year, pick April to March. 3. Download the PDF, print it and get each receipt signed by your landlord. 4. Submit the receipts to your employer's payroll team before the investment-proof deadline, usually January to March. ## What a valid rent receipt includes - Tenant and landlord names - Rent amount in figures and words, and the month it covers - Address of the rented property - How the rent was paid - Landlord's PAN if yearly rent is above ₹1 lakh - Landlord's signature, plus a revenue stamp for cash payments above ₹5,000 ## How much HRA can you save? Employers usually ask for rent receipts when monthly rent is more than ₹3,000. Keep a rent agreement and bank transfer records too, as the tax department can ask for proof. ### When is landlord PAN mandatory? When annual rent is more than ₹1 lakh (₹8,333 a month). If the landlord has no PAN, they must give a signed declaration. ### Is a revenue stamp needed on a rent receipt? A ₹1 revenue stamp is needed on receipts for cash payments above ₹5,000. It is not needed when rent is paid by bank transfer, UPI or cheque. ### Can I make rent receipts if I don't actually pay rent? No. Claiming HRA with fake receipts is tax evasion and can lead to penalties of up to 200% of the tax. Only create receipts for rent you really pay. ### Is it free? What do I pay for?
