Salary slip format explained
A salary slip has two halves. Earnings list what the employee earned in the month. Deductions list what was held back. Net pay is earnings minus deductions.
Common earnings
- Basic: usually 40% to 50% of gross. PF and gratuity are based on it.
- HRA: house rent allowance, partly tax-free in the old regime (see the HRA calculator).
- Conveyance, medical and special allowances: fixed amounts that make up the rest of gross pay.
Common deductions
- PF: 12% of basic, often capped at basic of ₹15,000 (₹1,800).
- ESI: 0.75% of gross when gross is ₹21,000 a month or less.
- Professional tax: a state tax, often ₹200 a month, up to ₹2,500 a year.
- TDS: monthly income tax based on the employee's projected yearly tax. Estimate it with the income tax calculator.
Paid days and loss of pay
If an employee was absent without paid leave, enter fewer paid days. Earnings are reduced in proportion (paid days ÷ days in month). Deductions are not reduced automatically, so adjust PF and ESI if needed.
Frequently asked questions
What does a salary slip contain?
Company and employee details, pay period, days worked, earnings (basic, HRA, allowances), deductions (PF, ESI, professional tax, TDS), net pay in figures and words, and a signature or note that it is computer generated.
Is a salary slip mandatory in India?
Employers covered by labour laws must give wage slips. Under the new labour codes employers must issue wage slips to employees, which can be electronic.
How is ESI calculated?
ESI applies when gross wages are ₹21,000 a month or less. The employee pays 0.75% and the employer pays 3.25% of gross wages.
Can I make a salary slip for a loan application?
Only for salary actually paid. Banks verify salary slips against bank statements and Form 16. Creating a false salary slip is fraud.
Is it free? What do I pay for?
Yes, everything works for free. Free downloads carry a small "Made free with SaralTools" line. Pay only if you want a clean PDF or a ★ premium design: ₹9 for one download (use it within 24 hours), or ₹49 for unlimited downloads and all designs for 30 days. It is a one-time payment and nothing renews automatically. Right now we are launching, so paid plans are not open yet and every design is free to use.
How do I pay?
Tap "Remove watermark", enter your mobile number and pay with UPI (PhonePe, Google Pay, Paytm), card or net banking. Payments are handled by Cashfree, an RBI-authorised payment company; we never see your card or UPI details. Pro switches on within seconds. No account or password is needed.
I changed my phone or cleared my browser. How do I get Pro back?
- Open this page on the new phone or browser and tap "Remove watermark".
- Tap "Already paid? Restore Pro".
- Type your order ID (it starts with ST) or the mobile number you paid with, then tap Restore Pro.
Pro comes back with the same end date as before. The order ID works any number of times; the mobile number works up to 3 times per payment.
Where do I find my order ID?
It is shown on the screen right after you pay. Take a screenshot or note it down. Lost it? Restore with your mobile number instead, or email
help@saraltools.in with the number you paid with and we will send it to you.
Can I use Pro on two devices?
Yes. Pay on one device, then use "Restore Pro" with your order ID on the other. Both work until the plan ends.
Money was deducted but Pro is not active. What should I do?
Wait one minute, then use "Restore Pro" with your mobile number. If it still does not work, email
help@saraltools.in within 7 days with the mobile number you paid with. We will switch Pro on or give you a full refund.
