## Where SIFs fit

Until 2025, investors chose between mutual funds (low minimum, standard strategies) and PMS (₹50 lakh minimum, custom strategies). SEBI's Specialised Investment Fund framework adds a middle option: run by mutual fund houses, with a ₹10 lakh minimum and room for strategies such as long-short equity, sector rotation or active debt that ordinary funds cannot use.

## What this calculator shows

All three options start with the same amount and the same gross return. Each year the product's cost is taken off the return. The difference in the final values is purely the effect of costs, so you can see what a higher fee really costs over the years.

## Before investing in a SIF

- Read the strategy's information document: SIFs can take more risk than regular funds.
- Check how often you can redeem; some strategies allow it only weekly or less often.
- Keep the investment for the strategy's suggested period.

## Frequently asked questions

### What is a SIF?

A Specialised Investment Fund is a product launched under SEBI rules from April 2025 and run by mutual fund houses. It can use strategies that ordinary mutual funds cannot, such as more flexible long-short equity or debt strategies, and is meant for investors with more money and risk appetite.

### What is the minimum investment in a SIF?

₹10 lakh per investor across the SIF strategies of a fund house, checked at PAN level. Accredited investors are exempt. Once you meet the minimum, many SIFs allow SIP, SWP and STP.

### How is a SIF taxed?

SIFs work under the mutual fund structure, so they are taxed like mutual funds: by the type of strategy (equity-oriented or not) and how long you hold. Tax is due only when you redeem, unlike PMS where each trade in your account can create tax.

### Which return should I assume?

SIF strategies are new and their returns are not known yet. Use the same gross return for all three options; the calculator then shows only the effect of costs and minimums.
