# STP Calculator (Systematic Transfer Plan)

> Free STP calculator. Park a lumpsum in a liquid or debt fund and transfer it monthly into an equity fund. See the monthly transfer, interest earned while waiting and the final value.

Have a lumpsum but worried about investing it all at once? An **STP** keeps it in a liquid fund and moves a fixed amount into an equity fund every month. See the **monthly transfer**, the extra interest earned while waiting and the final value.

## How an STP works

1. You invest the full lumpsum in a liquid fund, where it earns a steady, low-risk return.
2. Every month a fixed amount moves automatically into the equity fund you chose.
3. After the last transfer, everything is in equity and keeps growing for the rest of the period.

The calculator moves an equal share each month and sends whatever interest is left in the liquid fund with the last transfer.

## STP vs lumpsum vs SIP

An STP sits between the two: the money is already set aside (unlike a SIP from salary) but enters equity gradually (unlike a lumpsum). See all three side by side in the [SIP vs lumpsum vs STP calculator](https://saraltools.in/sip-vs-lumpsum-calculator/).

## Common STP choices

- **Period:** 6 to 12 months for large amounts entering equity.
- **Source fund:** a liquid or overnight fund of the same fund house.
- **Frequency:** monthly is most common; weekly STPs also exist.

## Frequently asked questions

### What is the best STP period?

6 to 12 months is common for equity funds. Longer periods reduce timing risk further but keep more money out of equity for longer.

### Is STP better than investing a lumpsum directly?

If markets rose smoothly, a direct lumpsum would end slightly higher, and the calculator shows that difference honestly. STP's real benefit is protection against a sharp fall soon after you invest, which no smooth calculation can show.

### Is each STP transfer taxed?

Yes. Each transfer sells units of the liquid fund, so the small gain on those units is taxed at your slab rate. Because liquid fund gains are small, the tax is usually small.

### Which source fund is used for STP?

Usually a liquid, overnight or ultra-short debt fund of the same fund house, because STP works within one AMC.
