## Why XIRR and not simple return?

Suppose you invested ₹5,000 a month for two years (₹1.2 lakh) and it is now worth ₹1.38 lakh. The simple return is 15%, but most of the money was invested for much less than two years. XIRR takes each instalment's actual time into account and gives the yearly rate, about 14% here, which you can fairly compare with an FD or another fund.

## How to use it

1. Add every investment with its date. For a regular SIP, use **Fill a SIP**.
2. Add any redemptions or dividends as **Withdrawn**.
3. Add today's portfolio value as **Current value** with today's date.

```
Σ amounti ÷ (1 + XIRR)^(daysi ÷ 365) = 0
```

Investments count as money going out (negative) and withdrawals and current value as money coming in (positive). The calculator finds the rate that balances them, the same method as the XIRR function in Excel.

## Frequently asked questions

### What is XIRR?

XIRR is the yearly return that accounts for when each rupee went in or came out. It is the standard way to measure SIP returns, because a SIP instalment made last month has had far less time to grow than one made three years ago.

### Why is my XIRR different from the absolute return?

Absolute return just compares total gain with total invested, ignoring time. XIRR spreads the gain over the time each instalment was invested, so it is the number to compare with an FD rate or another fund.

### Which amounts should I enter?

Enter every investment as 'Invested', every redemption or dividend received as 'Withdrawn', and add the current value with today's date as 'Current value'.

### Is my data stored?

Only in this browser on this device, so you can come back to it. Nothing is uploaded.
