How an STP works
- You invest the full lumpsum in a liquid fund, where it earns a steady, low-risk return.
- Every month a fixed amount moves automatically into the equity fund you chose.
- After the last transfer, everything is in equity and keeps growing for the rest of the period.
The calculator moves an equal share each month and sends whatever interest is left in the liquid fund with the last transfer.
STP vs lumpsum vs SIP
An STP sits between the two: the money is already set aside (unlike a SIP from salary) but enters equity gradually (unlike a lumpsum). See all three side by side in the SIP vs lumpsum vs STP calculator.
Common STP choices
- Period: 6 to 12 months for large amounts entering equity.
- Source fund: a liquid or overnight fund of the same fund house.
- Frequency: monthly is most common; weekly STPs also exist.
