How the 8th Pay Commission salary is estimated
New basic = Current basic × Fitment factor (rounded to the nearest ₹100)
The fitment factor folds in the dearness allowance you already get, plus a real increase. When the new pay starts, DA usually restarts at 0%, and HRA percentages reset to lower rates. So comparing gross pay, not just basic, shows your real gain.
Example
A Level 6 employee with basic pay ₹35,400 and 58% DA in a Y-class city currently gets about ₹63,010 (basic + DA + 20% HRA). With a fitment factor of 2.0, the new basic would be ₹70,800, and with 16% HRA the gross would be about ₹82,130, an increase of around 30%.

Frequently asked questions
What is the fitment factor in the 8th Pay Commission?
It is the number your current basic pay is multiplied by to get the new basic pay. The 7th Pay Commission used 2.57. For the 8th Pay Commission, figures from 1.6 to 2.86 and higher have been reported, but nothing is official yet.
When will the 8th Pay Commission be implemented?
The commission was announced in January 2025 and is holding consultations in 2026. The government has not notified a final implementation date or fitment factor. Arrears may be paid from the effective date once it is decided.
What happens to DA when the new pay commission starts?
In past commissions, the accumulated DA was merged into the new basic pay through the fitment factor, and DA restarted from 0%. That is why your gross salary rises by less than the fitment factor suggests.
What will be the new minimum salary?
The current minimum basic is ₹18,000 (Level 1). With a fitment factor of 2.0 it would be ₹36,000, and with 2.86 it would be ₹51,480. These are estimates only.
